Take That back on stage for good with Williams

Take That back on stage for good with Williams
LONDON: Take That performed their first full concert with Robbie Williams back in the line-up on Friday as they kicked off their sell-out reunion tour.
The British male vocal group started their Progress Live tour before 55,000 people at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, northeast England. The tour is the first to feature all five members since 1995.
The band will play to 1.75 million people in Britain and Ireland before concerts in Milan, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Munich.
The concert started with five songs without Williams, before he emerged to perform some of his solo hits.
Williams rejoined the band for last year's "Progress" album after quitting the line-up in 1995.
He held off rejoining when Take That reformed for a series of shows in 2006, instead concentrating on his solo career.

‘Pirates 4’ still top pick at box office

‘Pirates 4’ still top pick at box office
LOS ANGELES: The fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie ruled the foreign box office for a second weekend, fending off strong debuts by the "Hangover" and "Kung Fu Panda" sequels.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," playing everywhere overseas, captured $123 million during the weekend, raising its total to $471 million -- more than three times its domestic gross ($153 million).
"The Hangover, Part II" pulled in $59 million from 40 markets. Warner Bros. said the opening is three times higher than the comparable opening gross of the original 2009 hit in the same markets.
The comedy drew huge numbers from its No. 1 U.K. bow ($16.4 million), while Australia chipped in $11.6 million and France $5.8 million. Germany and Russia will open this week.
"Kung Fu Panda 2" in 3D followed closely with $57 million from just 11 markets, mostly in Asia.
The sequel to 2008's "Kung Fu Panda" finished in the top spot in nine markets, with China ($18.5 million), Russia ($15 million) and South Korea ($13 million) leading the list.
This week will see "Kung Fu Panda 2" adding 11 markets as it rolls out gradually over the summer months to capitalize on school holidays.
No. 4 on the weekend was "Fast Five," which grossed $13.3 million in 61 territories, pushing the foreign total for the turbo-charged street-racing sequel to $346 million.
"Rio" came in at No. 5 with $3.8 million from 37 markets for an overseas total of $321.9 million.

Bollywood sequels: a recipe for success?

Bollywood sequels: a recipe for success?
MUMBAI: A glut of Bollywood sequels are due out in the coming months, prompting questions about whether the industry has run out of ideas or is just milking a successful formula in troubled times.
More than a dozen follow-ups are in the pipeline, including "Bheja Fry 2" (Brain Fry), a second "Dabangg" (Fearless), a third in the "Dhoom" franchise and another installment of the "Golmaal" series.
Shah Rukh Khan is also getting in on the act, with a sequel due out by the end of the year of his hit "Don". The action film, in which the actor reportedly does his own stunts, is currently in post-production.
Bollywood studios are increasingly desperate for a money-spinner, with box office takings in the Indian film industry as a whole down for the last two years and the lack of original, quality script-writing a common complaint.
But "Bheja Fry 2" director Sagar Ballary rejected the notion that follow-ups are an easy option -- and said success was not guaranteed.
"I didn't rush to make the sequel immediately after the first film came out in 2007. We waited for the right script to make this part two," he said.
"Every film stands on its own. Whether it's a sequel or not, the film has to be good to work."
"Bheja Fry,", starring comedian Vinay Pathak, is based on the popular 1998 French comedy "Le Diner de Cons" (The Dinner Game), which was also made into a Hollywood movie, "Dinner for Schmucks".
Follow-ups are an established part of Hollywood. Some films, like those in the "Godfather" trilogy, are arguably better than the original. Others, like the Star Wars prequels, fail to find favour with fans or critics.
Bollywood, which is increasingly following Hollywood trends in filmmaking and marketing, has not been averse to sequels in the past.
Notable franchises include the crime comedy "Munnabhai" series, starring Sanjay Dutt.
The "Golmaal" series, which came out in 2006, 2008 and 2010, were all popular.
Director Rohit Shetty will be hoping the fourth, starring Kareena Kapoor and Ajay Devgn, will be just as successful and has no qualms about doing another follow-up.
"If I have created a brand, why should I be apologetic about making money on it? You reap what you sow, right?" Shetty was quoted as saying in the Hindustan Times newspaper recently.
The "Dhoom" series has equally been a box office winner throughout the last decade.
Bollywood producer Arbaaz Khan, who will direct "Dabangg 2", said the film was at the scripting stage and hopes that it will live up to audiences' expectations.
"Dabangg", a corrupt cop romp starring Salman Khan, was one of the few hits last year, winning a host of awards including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment at last week's National Film Awards.
Arbaaz Khan said a sequel is justified given the film's following.
"It was the biggest mass entertaining film of the last year that did extremely well at the box office. So, the sequel, too, will hopefully work like the first one," he said.
For all their insistence on artistic integrity, Khan, Ballary and other filmmakers admit that financial factors are important.
With the "brand" already known, less has to be spent on marketing and success is more likely, the argument goes.
"Producers are demanding because for them it's good business," said Ballary. "They know sequels will surely recover the cost of the box office because of the success of part one and there's not much to lose.
"There are many scripts and good story ideas in the market but producers don't want to risk new ideas and they feel it's safe to work with a sequel because audiences like it."
Khan added: "The pressure to deliver a hit is bigger because people will surely have greater expectations."

Jagmohan Mundhra who once made erotic flicks like Night Eyes, Sexual Malice and Tales of the Kama Sutra before digressing into the socially relevant cinema like Bawandar, directs Naughty @ 40.

‘Akshara Gowda insisted on taking off her clothes’

Akshara Gowda has been making headlines even before her first film makes it to the theatres.

Just recently, Akshara was in the news for being the ‘new girl’ in cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s life, though the latter denied that he’s dating Akshara. Now, the girl has got everyone talking because of the topless scenes she has shot for the upcoming film Chitkabrey.
Sunnet Arora, the producer of the film, says Akshara has gone topless for a love scene in the film. He goes on to add that there was no pressure on Akshara to strip but she did it of her own accord. However, now that the film is ready for release, Akshara has developed cold feet and has backed out from promoting it.
“Her (Akshara’s) boldness got her the role. During the love making scene, she insisted on taking off her clothes to look real and gave fantastic expressions. But now she has disappeared,” producer Sunnet Arora is quoted as saying by a news daily.
Sunnet also reveals that Akshara stayed with him in his flat for a week but moved out after that.

Showcasing Preeti Desai - hot and exotic!

FROM MIDDLESBROUGH TO MUMBAI

There’s much that’s desi and much that’s exotic about Preeti Desai, the latest Bollywood import from UK. Having already sent the gossip mills in overdrive because of her ‘romantic’ liaison and a dare-bare photoshoot, Preeti now makes her debut in Shor In The City.

The face is bona fide Indian. She could have been just another pretty girl from Ahmedabad. But Preeti Desai’s heavy English accent gives away her British roots - a girl who was born to Gujarati parents in Middlesbrough, attended a Catholic school and went on to train in hair and beauty therapy from Middlesbrough College before opening a salon of her own.
The door to fame was flung wide open in an unexpectedly pleasant twist of fate. In 2006, Preeti participated in the Miss Great Britain contest and was placed fifth. But then, the crown winner Danielle Lloyd was stripped of the title on the grounds of impropriety and a poll was conducted by The Sun newspaper to choose the new winner. Preeti Desai was voted as the new Miss Great Britain 2006, becoming the first person of colour to win the coveted title.
That first step into showbiz metamorphosed into a leap that Preeti took into the world of modelling. Now as Bollywood beckons Preeti, we bring you the more inside dope on the girl that’s got everyone talking.

Kavita who? you ask! Well, she isn’t a well-known name yet but hopes to change that after this eye-popping photoshoot that has her in various states of undress. Arguably, it is the boldest skin-show done by any new actress for an animal cause.

In case, you itch to know more about her, Kavita has a few films in her kitty, including a movie titled Om Allah and another one called Paanch Ghante Mein Paanch Crore.

Nicole Scherzinger bares it all for GQ India

NICOLE GOES TOPLESS
Popstar Nicole Scherzinger has posed topless for a spread that will be published in the Indian edition of men's magazine GQ.

The former 'Pussycat Dolls' singer who was in the top 10 of another lad's mag FHM's annual 'Hot 100 list', wore nothing but her long hair worn loose for the shoot, reported Huffington Post online.
The 34-year-old who has been dating F1 champ Lewis Hamilton for two years now, has now embarked on a solo career after her girl band days.

Bollywood actresses stripped in fake images

WHEN FAKE WAS PASSED FOR REAL
Almost every actress has gone through it. The situation is so weird that they don’t even know when their fake pictures, mostly in bikinis, start doing the rounds of the internet. Preeti Desai can’t understand the hullabaloo over her pictures in a swim-suit, but when she saw her eye-popping, semi-nude pictures easily available on the net, she went on record to say that the images are morphed.

Before Preeti, it was Vidya Balan. The actress’s fake image in a see-through bikini on a Maxim cover proved deadly for her reputation, though her fans silently wished to see her that slim. It’s not only Vidya but Sonakshi Sinha too who fell prey to the morphed image trap. Sonakshi, who swears never to don a bikini, was seen in a green two-piece on a fake Maxim cover. Other actresses like Celina Jaitley and South actress Khushboo too had to lodge complaints against the use of their morphed images.

Bollywood’s new girls dare to bare!

HOTTIES STRIP!
Move over, Mallika Sherawat and Sherlyn Chopra. The brigade of bold new Bollywood babes is here. The likes of Rakhi Vohra, Sofia Hayat, Poonam Pandey and Reeth don’t mind dropping their clothes and inhibitions if the role or photoshoot demands it.

In the times when what catches the eye is what sells, the newcomers in Bollywood have latched on to the mantra pretty fast and are already making headlines for reasons that draw adulations from some and repugnance from others.
Promises of stripping for team India, or daring to bare it all for an animal cause is something that the Bollywood sirens of yore seldom ventured into. But the bombshells of today go topless at the drop of a hat, pose in bikinis like it was a walk in the park.

Vidya Balan as Voluptuous Bombshell!

Vidya Balan has had to go through a lot to slip into the voluptuous character of Silk Smitha in the upcoming film Dirty Picture.
If low neckline tops and thigh-revealing skirts and ghagras were not enough to contend with, Vidya is now said to be opting for bum pads to get a sexier derriere for the film being directed by Milan Luthria.
Vidya was originally required to gain a lot of weight for her role and turn into a plump, pneumatic siren that Silk Smitha was in the prime of her acting career down south in the 80s and 90s. She was then required to lose the gained weight for another schedule of the shoot. Since such rapid swings in her weight could not have augured well for her health, the actress is learnt to be choosing an easier option.
She will use pads to look more rounded at all the required places, mostly the bust and butt.
The movie narrates the story of an attractive, sensuous woman who acquires fame but gets disillusioned in love and eventually destroys herself.
It’s a role with many shades, and if Vidya is going the extra mile, she thinks it is worth it.

Schwarzenegger revamps his image once again

LOS ANGELES - For 35 years, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been carefully crafting his public image, from Austrian bodybuilder and international action star to family man and Republican politician.

Now, with his split from Maria Shriver and revelations that he fathered a child with a member of his housekeeping staff, where does Schwarzenegger go from here? Can he have a future either in politics or film, and how does he once again reshape his image, especially in the eyes of female fans?

"His biggest problem as an action star has nothing to do with being an adulterer. It has to do with being 63 years old and physically wrecked — unless they're going to make `Terminator 6: The Golden Years,'" said David Leibowitz, a Phoenix-based public relations and crisis communications consultant. "The love child is almost the least of his worries."

For decades, though, Schwarzenegger was the safest of box-office bets, with his bulging, muscular physique and his quippy, punny one-liners. The "Terminator" movies alone have made more than $1 billion worldwide — most of that outside the United States.

"For me, he has never been a serious action star, but rather a sort of parody of himself," said Ali Arikan, chief film critic for the Turkish website Dipnot.tv and Roger Ebert contributor. "He had that wink in his eye even in earlier, more somber stuff like `Conan the Barbarian.' In fact, when he tried to be more serious, as with 1999's turgid `End of Days,' it was risible: nothing more hilarious than seeing Arnie `act!' So, he's basically been this goofy clown, shrewd and with great intelligence about his career, but a clown nonetheless."

Shrewd indeed. Around the movie work, this "clown" began adding some serious yet varied cred to the script, including roles as President Ronald Reagan's fitness guru, a campaigner for George W. Bush, and a founding backer with Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore in the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain.

Then, as Schwarzenegger's movie glory days began waning, he revamped his image again and became the improbable governor of California in a 2003 recall election.

Having a Kennedy heiress by his side certainly didn't hurt, despite the couple's disparate political leanings and even through claims that Schwarzenegger had groped other women. As former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown once put it, "Maria has been much more of a benefit to Arnold than Arnold has been to Maria."

Schwarzenegger often said being governor was the best job in the world, one he would have enjoyed holding longer had there not been term limits.

While in office, his highly choreographed, stage-managed appearances often seemed more like Hollywood productions than political forums. With Gov. Schwarzenegger, opportunities for image enhancement were seldom missed.

There was even talk about repealing the citizenship law to allow Schwarzenegger to run for president.

But his standing with voters was rocky throughout his governorship as the political neophyte sought to figure out where he stood on a host of divisive issues. Schwarzenegger's approval ratings plummeted during the 2005 special election in which he placed several conservative measures on the ballot, all of which voters resoundingly rejected. With Shriver's help, he apologized and reinvented himself once more as a political moderate, winning easy re-election in 2006.

During his second term, Schwarzenegger made bi-partisan friendships in the state Legislature and after signing legislation to restrict California's greenhouse gas emissions, he became a leader in the green energy cause.

But he was elected on a promise to fix California's chronic budget woes, and despite his best efforts, he soon gave in to the gimmickry and maneuvering that have been hallmarks of budget deal-making in Sacramento. He was seen as largely failing to accomplish his mandate, and his approval rating fell to 25 percent as he left office in 2010.

Lately, he's been jet-setting with the likes of "Terminator" director James Cameron and announcing he's ready to re-launch his acting career. But following his separation from Shriver after 25 years of marriage and the damaging baby revelations, he says he's putting those plans on hold.

As the owner of the Carolina Cinemas chain of movie theaters, Bill Banowsky sees Schwarzenegger making a comeback eventually — but only as an action star.

"I'd feel great about it if he's playing a `Terminator' role, if he's playing a role in a big action movie. I think he's going to do very well," said Banowsky, who also founded the independent distributor Magnolia Pictures. "If he comes out with a romantic comedy as a way to get back in, that would be really challenging for him."

And Arikan of the Turkish website suspects Schwarzenegger still has a future as a global star, despite his age.

"The international markets thrive on stars and cling onto them. Just look at the international numbers of `The Tourist' versus the U.S. ones," he said. "He could churn out action films every few years and expect the equivalent numbers that he got during the latter part of his career, like `The 6th Day' or `Eraser.' But he could never again soar the heights he once did with `T2' or `True Lies,' either nationally or internationally."

For now, though, it's wise for Schwarzenegger to apologize, lay low and focus on his family, which includes his four children with Shriver, said Melanie Ofenloch, a Dallas-based executive vice president at the global public relations firm Weber Shandwick. But it may not be enough. Part of why this transgression seems so appalling to women may be because Shriver herself has devoted so much of her life to championing women's issues: "I think they're going to have that mentality of: `How dare he?'"

"He's going to need to continue to show remorse. He's going to have to be honest about what's going on. If there's more to be found, then that's going to make it even more difficult," Ofenloch said. "But we are a society that's willing to give people a second chance."

Yet reaching out to women's groups is exactly the wrong thing to do, said Leibowitz, the Phoenix PR consultant.

"We live in a cynical age. People have gotten used to the idea that the celebrity who gets busted for DUI makes a huge contribution to Mothers Against Drunk Driving or the celebrity caught dog fighting does community service with the Humane Society," he said.

"If you take care of the personal first, the professional will follow," Leibowitz added. "If Arnold Schwarzenegger is able to mend his relationship with Maria Shriver and with his children, we'll see that in public. Women, y'all are really smart, you'll figure it out. It's a gut instinct thing."

Rebooted 'Pirates' sets overseas box office record

NEW YORK - The reengineered "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel "On Stranger Tides" found its smoothest sailing overseas, where it took in a record $256.3 million at the international box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That surpasses the previous record foreign opening of the sixth "Harry Potter" film, 2009's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which earned $236 million internationally.

Walt Disney co. said "On Stranger Tides," the fourth "Pirates" installment, earned $90.1 million domestically. Its combined worldwide total is $346.4 million, the fourth largest global opening ever.

The new 3-D film jettisons co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, but brings back Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. "Chicago" director Rob Marshall took the helm from Gore Verbinski, who directed the trilogy. Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane introduce new characters.

It was a risky reboot considering the popularity of the previous "Pirates" films. The last, 2007's "At World's End," opened with $114.7 million.

But "At World's End" was also badly reviewed and disappointing to much of its audience. For Disney, which has expansive merchandising and theme park tie-ins to "Pirates of the Caribbean," it's a crucial franchise. The first three movies earned a combined $2.7 billion worldwide.

"The whole play of this particular movie was based on a worldwide release because of our feeling of how strong the international marketplace would be," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution at Disney. "Johnny is not just a domestic star. Johnny is an international star."

Viane said the result vindicated the franchise's new look, that audiences "loved the rebooted attitude." Viane didn't comment on whether this meant a subsequent fifth film, but that seems extremely likely. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer already has a script in the works.

"On Stranger Tides" was the only new film in wide-release on the weekend. In its second week of release, the acclaimed comedy "Bridesmaids," starring Kristen Wiig, was second at the box office with $21 million. That was an impressively small decrease of just 20 percent from the Universal release's opening weekend of $26.2 million.

The slight decrease was even less than popular comedies like "The Hangover" and "Wedding Crashers," which had similarly sustained business due to strong word-of-mouth.

Last week's top film at the box office, the comic book adaptation "Thor," from Paramount, slid to third place in its third week of release. It earned $15.5 million, bringing its cumulative total to $145.4 million.

Making its limited-release debut was Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," which has received some of the best reviews for Allen in years. The Sony Pictures Classics release opened in just six theaters, but drew an exceptional per-screen average of more than $96,000.

Though "On Stranger Tides" had the best North America opening of the year, the international revenue was the larger story. The film traded on its foreign appeal by casting international stars like Cruz and setting itself in bright tropical locales.

"This proves the importance of the global marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com.

The film performed especially strong in Russia, China and India, accounting for $52.6 million. It set an all-time record in Russia, taking in $28.6 million.

The film benefited from higher ticket prices for 3-D showings, but perhaps more importantly from IMAX screenings. "On Stranger Tides" set a global record for IMAX with $16.7 million worldwide.

Propelled largely by the "Pirates" installment and the continuing success of "Bridesmaids," it was the second "up" weekend in a row as compared with box office figures from the same weekend last year. Next weekend, the three-day Memorial Day weekend, also appears bright, with debuts from "The Hangover Part II" from Warner Bros. and "Kung Fu Panda 2" from Paramount.

Combined with the second weekend of "On Stranger Tides," Dergarabedian expects it to be one of the biggest moviegoing Memorial Day weekends ever.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," $90.1 million.

2. "Bridesmaids," $21 million.

3. "Thor," $15.5 million.

4. "Fast Five," $10.6 million.

5. "Rio," $4.7 million.

6. "Priest," $4.6 million.

7. "Jumping the Broom," $3.7 million.

8. "Something Borrowed," $3.4 million.

9. "Water For Elephants," $2.2 million.

10. "Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family," $990,000.

Over 25 percent of the performers from Wrestlemania VII have died

Over one-quarter of the performers who took part in 1991's Wrestlemania VII have died, a wrestling website noted in the wake of the death of "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
The Wrestling Observer newsletter discovered that 14 of the 51 performers at the event have died in the past 20 years, with many of the deaths attributed to drug use (link is subscription only).
The list of wrestlers who have died since 1991 include some of the biggest stars in the sport like Savage, Andre the Giant, Miss Elizabeth and The British Bulldog. Causes of death include suicides, murder and heart attacks, some the result of years of anabolic steroid use. Savage died last week after suffering an apparent heart attack behind the wheel of his truck. His ex-wife, Miss Elizabeth, passed away after overdosing on a variety of drugs in 2003.
Looking at the list is a sobering reminder of the realities of a make-believe sport like professional wrestling. Not all of the men and women listed played a part in their own demise; referee Joey Marella was the victim of a car crash that occurred when he was driving home from a match.
As wrestlinginc.com points out, none of the 44 starters from the Super Bowl played in 1991 have passed away and only two of 44 boxers who held a championship belt that year are gone.
At 58, Savage made it nearly a decade longer than some of his deceased colleagues.

Britney Spears' messy lip-syncing duet

Even though Britney Spears has been on GMA and Jimmy Kimmel this year lazily performing songs from her latest album, it's been eons since anyone saw her attempt actual choreography. With her U.S. tour starting in less than a month, fans are inevitably wondering whether the mother of two still has it in her to do any serious hoofing.
If her two performances at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards are any indication, ticketholders for that tour should continue to set expectations low, since her moves weren't anything that would win her a spot on So You Think You Can Wiggle. As for whether she's gotten over her addiction to lip-synching, you're still much more likely to hear Kurt Cobain sing live this year than you are Britney.

e
Both of Spears' highly touted appearances on the Billboard Awards amounted to extended cameos, really. The three-hour telecast opened with Spears joining Rihanna nearly minutes into "S&M," entering with her wrists cuffed together with very long chains, just as Rihanna's were. The duet partners proceeded to suggestively writhe around separate poles before coming back together for a climactic pillow fight, as if to say, just kidding about the kinkiness! But Spears didn't even come off well in that skuffle, barely raising her pillow above waist level.
It may be time to institute a rule that, for live TV duets, either both parties lip-synch or both sing live, as to avoid glaring mismatches of the sort that found Rihanna clearly using her own pipes and Spears clearly years beyond caring if her mouth remotely matches her electro-bot studio recordings.
Which is not to say that Rihanna came out ahead in every regard. Before Spears came out, some of the moves that Rihanna shared with her dancers—or rather, her dancers' disembodied hands—were risible enough that it's as if her choreographer wanted to make sure the star's name and "class act" never appear in the same sentence again.

For the next two and a half hours, the show teased the reappearance of Spears, who eventually came out in the middle of a Nicki Minaj number. Well, "middle" is a misnomer: Britney actually came out to sing exactly 45 seconds of her current single, "Till the World Ends," while dancing every bit as energetically as in her first appearance—which is to say that she appeared to be conserving her energy for the tour. Or perhaps she thought, like some folks, that the world would be ending the previous day, and thus the lack of prep.
The show was notable largely for who didn't perform. Aside from her appearance in a commercial for a web browser, Lady Gaga was completely MIA—odd for an inveterate attention freak whose new album was coming out the very next day. Taylor Swift showed up to accept two awards and act as a presenter, but didn't sing, though presumably the start of her tour this week nixed the possibility of a production number. Justin Bieber also accepted two awards but apparently couldn't be coaxed into breaking into song.
Nevertheless, when Bieber kissed girlfriend Selena Gomez on the lips for the first time on live television, he at least provided the closest thing to a water-cooler moment. At least for viewers who are too young to have any idea what a water cooler is.
Older viewers do still have a couple of performances worth talking about at work the next day. Cee-Lo sang while sitting at a piano that first levitated and then did a slow 360-degree revolution in the air... with Cee-Lo still attached. Was it special effects, or was it Superglue?

Beyonce, the hardest working woman in show business, put enough work into her performance for herself and about 50 Britneys. At first, viewers may not even been sure that her appearance was live and not on film, since she was seen dancing in perfect unison with cloned images of herself that were clearly on tape. Soon enough it was obvious one of the images of her was not a projection but the real thing. Whether the typically impressive performance will be enough to get the masses to love her polarizingly unhummable new single, "Run the World (Girls)," remains to be seen.
But on this night of supposed winners, Beyonce was one of the few principles who came out clearly on the winning side. Not so with host Ken Jeong (The Hangover), whose pick as emcee had people wondering "who?" beforehand and "why?" afterward. As hosts go, he was pretty much the anti-James Franco, with his manic energy and utter commitment. But the opening comic production number with Minaj and Train's Pat Monahan fell flat, and it only got worse with Jeong challenging Keith Urban and Travis Barker to banjo and drum duels, respectively.
Also losing: everyone who wore sunglasses while performing, which at times seemed to be a majority of the billed artists. Taio Cruz makes great pop singles, but the shades only reinforced his utter anonymity as a live performer. When the shades-wearing Far East Movement were backed by a (presumably string-synching) female string quartet also wearing sunglasses, the ayes did definitely not have it.
Most notable bleeps? That would be a tie between Lil Wayne and U2. Weezy's brief rap during Mary J. Blige's number included five censor-able lyrics, at which point you might ask: Why bother having him show up? Meanwhile, any lessons learned by U2 after Bono got a network in trouble by swearing at the 2003 Golden Globe Awards were lost on the Edge, who had to be bleeped while making an innocuous remark while accepting an award for biggest live act.
Oddly, the three hours climaxed with a performance that didn't seem to belong to the same galaxy as anything that came before it: Neil Diamond performing a singalong medley of "Sweet Caroline" and "America." It would have been perfect if, as Diamond sang "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty," the producers had cut back to earlier highlights from the show, like Rihanna's "S&M" moves, to show just what makes America great.

Anyway, there was one thing that made the 2011 Billboard Awards great: the part in will.i.am's hair. This section of his noggin was electronically enhanced to glow a different color each of the three times he appeared on stage—pink, when the group did its inevitable medley of their 500 biggest hits; green, when he was introducing U2; and blue, when he accepted the Black Eyed Peas' award for duo/group. Will.i.am's speech was a curious one, including lines like "I thank technology, because without technology we wouldn't be here" (right before he worked in a plug for the computer company that employs him).
Will.i.am had a point, at least judging from all the tech-"enhanced" performances in the show. Now if technology could only re-teach Britney to dance.

Justin Bieber Denies That He's a 'Brat': Who's the Brattiest Star?

Look out, Marg Helgenberger. Justin Bieber does not take too kindly to being called a brat.
The 17-year-old pop star fired back at the "CSI" actress after she reportedly said he was "kind of a brat" during his appearances on the show.
"It's kinda lame when someone you met briefly and never worked with comments on you," Bieber tweeted on Monday. "I will continue to wish them luck and be kind."

Welcome to GagaVille: Singer to Debut Songs on FarmVille

LOS ANGELES –  Lady Gaga is turning to an unusual method to cultivate her fan base: The pop icon is releasing songs from her new album on a section of the popular online game "FarmVille" before they can be heard anywhere else.
The singer, known for her outrageous styles and hits such as "Poker Face" and "Bad Romance," will allow singles from "Born This Way" (due out May 23) to be heard within a specially created farm, called "GagaVille," in the game. Players will have to complete tasks to hear one exclusive new track per day streamed online from May 17 to 19. Starting on May 20, players will be also able to unlock additional songs that aren't exclusive.
"FarmVille" is one of the most popular games on Facebook, played by about 46 million people worldwide each month. It lets players tend to virtual farms by harvesting crops, tending to livestock and decorating cottages to earn points. Its creator, Zynga, makes money by selling virtual items, such as seeds or cows or farm sheds, in the game.
"GagaVille" will be short-lived. Zynga says it's running the special only until May 26 to celebrate the debut of "Born This Way." The company wouldn't say whether Lady Gaga picked "FarmVille" to debut her songs or if Zynga concocted this unusual promotion, which will feature magical unicorns, sheep on motorcycles and other Gaga-inspired items on "GagaVille."
Zynga spokeswoman Amy Sezak said "FarmVille" has massive appeal, just like Lady Gaga, whose first single from the new CD, also titled "Born This Way," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Many people who play "FarmVille," it turns out, are also fans of Lady Gaga on their Facebook pages.

Tom Petty Worried 'Idol' Winners Will Be Eaten Alive by Music Industry

After more than three decades of hit making, Tom Petty is one of rock and roll's ultimate survivors. But in today’s world of instant stardom, Petty wonders whether singers that win shows like “American Idol” might actually be missing out on the most valuable industry training of all – the slog.
“The only bad about [winning record contracts] is all the training you get while you work your way up. We came up in increments – you got a gig, then you got a bigger gig, then you got a record contract bit-by-bit,” Petty told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “We’re into instant gratification. They want to be stars right away. So what we’ll have to see is how many of them are around in 30 years, and how they’ll handle that.”
The 60-year-old musician and his wife, Dana Petty, were being honored at The Midnight Mission’s Golden Heart Awards in Beverly Hills for their dedication in helping the many homeless people in Los Angeles over the years.
“I’m a very blessed person so I feel it’s important to give something back and I like this particular charity because it’s for everyone and it offers a hand to anyone under any condition on the street,” he said. “It’s called ‘On the Cracks.’ It’s really simple stuff and I’m just trying to raise awareness, do what I can, and maybe I can inspire somebody else to do what they can.”
Speaking of inspiration, Petty had the fortunate of meeting his inspiration, Elvis Presley, when he was just a little boy. “That was just a really impressive thing, I think was only 10 and Elvis was pretty larger than life,” Petty continued. “It was 1961 so he was bigger than life and inspired me. I bought a few records and after that I caught the bug, the rock n’ roll bug.”

Country Stars Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton Wed

Country mega-stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert tied the knot this weekend in the bride’s home state of Texas, according to a report from The Boot.
The singers wed in front of 550 of their closest friends and family Saturday at a San Antonio ranch.
The bash boasted a star-studded guest list, including Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Dierks Bently, the Bellamy Bros and Kelly Clarkson.
Clarkson gushed about the reception Sunday, taking to her Facebook page to talk about her friends.
“So I went to Miranda and Blake Shelton’s wedding last night and it was the greatest wedding/reception I’ve ever been to,” the 29-year-old singer wrote.
Lambert, 27, wore her mother’s wedding dress as she walked down the aisle to marry Shelton, 34.
The couple has been dating since 2006.

Britney Spears 'Mentally Incapable' of Getting Married While Under Conservatorship

On the surface, Britney Spears is truly back, y’all.
But behind the scenes, there's still big trouble. In fact if things keep going as they are now, Spears will never be able to get married.

Ever.

First, the good news. The pop princess joined forces with Ryan Seacrest to host the 2011 KIIS-FM Wango Tango concert in Los Angeles over the weekend, looking every inch her former fabulous self in a body-hugging, geometrically patterned strapless dress.
Spears also made a rare official public appearance last week on the arm of agent/boyfriend Jason Trawick, hosting the charity dinner "An Evening of Southern Style," in support the St. Bernard Project, which is an organization dedicated to helping the struggling victims whose lives were affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Lady Gaga Tops Forbes' Celeb 100 List

Lady Gaga, known worldwide for her outrageous styles and hit songs, tops this year's Forbes' Celebrity 100 List, knocking Oprah Winfrey from her No. 1 spot.
Along with earning nearly $90 million during her "Monster Ball" tour, Gaga boasts 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers, according to Forbes. Her recent hit, "Born This Way," hit one million digital downloads in just five days.
Oprah Winfrey came in second on the list, earning $290 million last year. Though she was the list's highest earner, her 5.87 million followers on Twitter weren't enough to top Gaga.
Pop sensation Justin Bieber debuts at number 3 on the list, with $53 million earned in the past year. Bieber's hit single, "Baby," set a YouTube record with over 500 million views.
The Celebrity 100 list includes film and television actors, TV personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians, Forbes says. Celebs are ranked by entertainment-related earnings, media exposure, and social media power.

IDOL 411: Scotty McCreery's 'Amazed', Haley Reinhart Stumbles

Haley Reinhart stumbled, but she didn't fall.
Each of the three remaining "American Idol" contestants won a round on Wednesday night, making the final two harder to predict than ever.
If you ask us, Haley had the strongest night -- and her performance of Led Zeppelin's "What Is and What Should Never Be" was the best of the evening, despite her little trip on the stairs. But let's take it round by round, shall we?
Scotty McCreery kicks things off with "Amazed" by Lonestar. Guest mentor Beyonce thinks he's a "cutie pie" (Jennifer Lopez also blushes over his short hair and rosy cheeks), but the performance isn't as emotional as it could have been. We agreed with Randy that his choice of a pop-ier song was a smart one, and Steven thought he "kicked that song into the middle of next week."
